A Black Woman’s Power: A Poem

Written by Kaylee Morgan
There is something powerful about being a Black woman.
I’m not sure where it comes from but there is this confidence that is woven into our DNA.
It’s a boldness, a force to be reckoned with that can’t help but be noticed.
A spark that starts a fire, the fuel that causes a movement, a voice that starts a revolution.

The Black woman doesn’t store the peace, the joy, and the confidence. No, she gifts it.
See, fires, movements, and revolutions are not never guaranteed, yet they exist and they happen.
Confidence, peace, and joy.
When you look at the world, these are not something you expect Black women to have.
Yet, we have it.
We not only have it, we have it in abundance.
The Black woman’s cup overflows and she isn’t selfish.
The Black woman doesn’t store the peace, the joy, and the confidence.
No, she gifts it.
That is who the Black woman is.
This is the power that she has.
It’s in music, it’s in film, it’s in TV.
It’s in fashion, it’s in presence, it’s in friendship.
The odds are not in her favor.
Her community is under attack.
She is under attack.
Yet, she marches forward.
Head held high.
One fist to the sky.
Thinking of others, not only herself.
Yes, there is something powerful about being a Black woman.
I’m not sure where it comes from but there is this confidence woven into our DNA.
It’s a boldness, it’s a force to be reckoned with, that can’t help but be noticed.
It’s contagious.
It’s desired.
It’s necessary.
And to unlock it, the Black woman must simply be.
She must exist exactly how she was designed and made to be.
If she can do this, the fires will set a blaze.
If she can do this, movements will be fueled.
If she can do this, revolutions will be started.
Despite all odds, the Black woman’s access to confidence never ceases.
Despite all circumstances, the Black woman continues to share and gift this confidence.
Despite all things, the Black woman continues to thrive.
The Black woman is for you.
The Black woman is with you.
She just asks that you do the same.
She asks you to be for her.
She asks you to be with her.
She asks that you love her, like she has loved you.
