World Concern starts by listening. When people are heard, they are empowered and empowered individuals mobilize their communities. They begin to identify what’s needed most, and determine how they can meet these needs, rather than depending on someone else. They take ownership of the work and become agents of their own change. Once this happens, they begin to see themselves as valued by God. They, in turn, begin to value their children, and others. They make peace with those who oppose them or are different from them. They value education and the opportunities it affords. They desire to give back, and often do. When lives and communities are touched by God’s transforming love, the transformation is dramatic and long-lasting.
The community leaders of Khassim will work together with World Concern to prioritize the areas of development that they want to see change first. With your monthly support, villagers will build upon their strengths and resources to carry out projects that may include things such as improving health through clean water and sanitation, agricultural training and sustainable farming practices, gaining access to education and generating income through small businesses and economic development. Typically, it takes communities about three years to make substantial progress in development, during which time, they experience holistic development where not only their physical needs are met, but spiritual transformation takes place as well. Here are some of the key areas of focus in Khassim:
Providing clean, safe water to an entire village as well as educating villagers on the importance of proper hygiene are some of the most empowering skills you can give to a community in need. There are only two working water points for the entire population of over 1,000 people in Khassim. Can you imagine sharing a spigot or pump with 1,000 people each day? People either stand in line or walk long distances to collect water each day. Many suffer from water-borne diseases. There is no health center in the community. You’ll help ensure families have access to safe water, practice good hygiene, and are healthy.
While meeting practical needs is a vital element in community development, it is only the beginning of the transformation process. Throughout the process, once trusting relationships are built, you’ll help establish healthy grounds for the seeds of spiritual transformation and eternal life to be sown. Generations of poverty and conflict have squelched spiritual growth in Khassim and left people without hope or knowledge of God’s good plan for their lives. You’ll connect families with local churches and equip church leaders to lead others to Christ.
In most rural villages where World Concern works, families depend on farming or livestock for survival. In Khassim, farmers lack knowledge and support to grow sustainable, productive crops, and therefore, families do not have enough food to last through the year. Extreme poverty and limited food sources mean children are undernourished. You’ll help equip moms and dads with training and tools to grow flourishing crops and vegetable gardens to feed their families year-round. Through savings groups and small business training, women become empowered as they work together to generate more income not only for their families but for the economic development of the village as well.
Whether it’s literacy courses for adults, providing children with access to nearby schools, training and equipping teachers or helping community members build a school in their own village when others are not accessible, education is an invaluable step in changing the future of the entire community. A remnant of a basic grass structure that was destroyed by high winds is the only classroom used by the few students who attend school in Khassim. Lack of education keeps kids trapped in a perpetual cycle of poverty. You’ll help educate the kids in Khassim village, and ensure more children are learning and thriving in school.
Sixty-four-year-old Iliyas Abdelil has lived in the village of Khassim his entire life, and he has endured suffering and challenges throughout most of his life. Despite working hard as a farmer and fisherman to support and care for his family, including seven children, the area has not had good rainfall in recent years, his harvests have been limited and his family has struggled. His and other families in the village are plagued with health concerns, lack of food, education, and generations of poverty.
When he or one of his family members are sick, they have to try to find transportation and travel long distances to seek medical care. With no school in the village and no teachers, children grow up without an education.
His great hope is that his village can unite and work together to overcome these challenges. “Considering these difficulties, I call on all members of the community of Khassim to be united and engaged in this partnership that binds us with World Concern to come out of our suffering,” he declared.
Iliyas is on the right track. Engaging the community is the first step towards change. Join Khassim village in their journey of transformation.
