Questions to Ask to Get Your Oomph Back

Written by Dawn Sadler

How are you doing?

Over the last few weeks I’ve had several people reach out to me about coaching and there seems to be a similar thread: the world is getting back to normal but they don’t feel ready. They’re in a post-pandemic funk. Can you relate? (Also, are we post pandemic? Are we at least close? )

Because I am a Christian Productivity Coach you might think I would say something like: Set a goal! Make a plan! Get going! Those tools are useful and there is a time for them. But many people tell me (and I’ve felt it too) they just don’t have the oomph. We’re oomph-less.

So how do we get our oomph back?

I’m not sure I have any brilliant answers. What YOU need may be completely different from someone else. I can’t imagine what you’ve been through over the last year. But I’ve been reflecting on four questions that are helping me find my own oomph and move forward. These aren’t quick fixes but have served as a trusted inner compass. I’m sharing them here and I hope you find them useful, too.

1. Where do I feel most powerful?

Maybe it’s performing or creating. Maybe it’s making something or building something or fixing something. Maybe it’s a good workout or finishing a difficult but rewarding project. It’s where you find “flow.” It’s the place where you don’t need anyone’s permission or approval to express yourself fully and authentically. Make space for more of this.

2. Where do I feel most connected to God?

Maybe it’s the ocean, or the forest, or church, or the quiet early hours before anyone is awake. Maybe it’s meditating on scripture or worship. Maybe it’s sitting in silence in His presence. Wherever it is, find your place. Visit often.

3. Where do I feel most loved?

Go there. Book the flight. Schedule the coffee. Plan the vacation. Have real conversations until tears roll down your face and your stomach hurts from laughing. Hug your people, hard. Forgive.

4. Where do I feel most connected to my purpose?

Each of us are divinely purposed and uniquely called to love and serve others for God’s glory. Where do you contribute that lights you up and makes a meaningful difference for others? Do that. Lots of that.

I’m no expert in how this works or why this works, but making time for these four spaces each week is helping me move forward. They are four pathways that lead me to be more open to God’s voice. Where I feel the gentle nudge forward when I can’t find my way. Where the healing begins. Where I start to believe again in the person I am becoming.

So what about you? Where do you feel most powerful, loved, connected to God and your purpose?

Wherever you are in your own journey forward, you’re doing great. Really.

And I’m cheering you on.
